1 – Mission San Luis Rey

The largest of the 21 Californian missions, Mission San Luis Rey, was built in 1798. Known as the “King of the Mission,” it is home to the Franciscan Friars community. When you visit, explore the European gothic cathedral, see the outdoors including the California’s oldest pepper tree and the original “lavanderia”, and learn more about the Mission’s history by visiting the museum.

2 – Rancho Guajome

A few miles from Oceanside, discover an 1850 adobe hacienda. This 2,219-acre Mexican land grant was named “Guajome,” from the Luiseno Native American word “wakhavumi” which means “the home of the frogs.”

Between 1852 and 1853, Cave Johnson Couts and his wife Ysidora built a 7,000-square-foot adobe hacienda. It featured 28 living rooms, including the family living quarters, a chapel, a schoolroom, and a carriage courtyard.

Mr. Couts successfully developed his rancho for cattle and livestock. He also initiated agricultural commerce by establishing large orchards on his property.

3 – Heritage Park and Museum


Created in 1970, Heritage Park regroups Oceanside’s historical landmark around a central gazebo. It offers a glimpse into local life over a century ago. As you explore, you’ll encounter preserved buildings such as the train depot, Libby schoolhouse, city jail, and Blade newspaper building. Thanks to volunteers, you can sneak a peek inside if you visit on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

4 – Graves “Top Gun” House

Constructed in 1888 by Dr. Henry Graves, this Folk Victorian-style house served as a summer retreat for the Graves family. Restored and relocated one block from his original location, the house is considered one of the oldest beachfront cottages in Oceanside.

The house gained fame after being featured in the blockbuster movie “Top Gun,” particularly in iconic scenes of Maverick riding his motorcycle and his romantic scenes with Charlie. Consequently, it is now commonly called the “Top Gun House.” The sequel’s release, “Top Gun: Maverick,” has once again boosted the house’s popularity as a tourist attraction.

5 – Roberts Cottages


In 1928, entrepreneur Alfred J. Clark built 23 small beach cottages called “Clark’s Cottage DeLuxe.” For $3.00 per day, beachgoers enjoyed a relaxing getaway with a picturesque ocean view. Over the years, these cottages have passed through various owners and are now individually owned. They represent a landmark of Oceanside’s early tourism industry.
